Hypocrisy

I was watching an episode of Jeeves & Wooster the other day. It was one of the ones in America, and Bertie’s fearsome Aunt Agatha has come to stay. At the start of the episode she had given Bertie the mission of ensuring that one of society’s young rips doesn’t get involved in the theatre business. From her comments, she has a deep loathing for anyone involved in the theatrical profession, as it is a common, base profession, unsuitable for anyone but the dregs of society. And yet she has no problem with squeezing invites to premières from financial backers of productions, sitting in the best seats of plush and luxurious theatres, and enjoying a show. She would quite happily neuter any and all actors and stage performers, yet just as happily enjoy the fruits of their work.
